Last known contact: 2026-02-12 in Aptos, Santa Cruz, CA. Circumstances: On 03/22/2026, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the Osocales mobile home park at 4151 Soquel Drive, Unit 12, for a welfare check on Charles Dames.

The property manager reported that Charles had failed to pay his rent for the first time in his twenty-year tenancy and noted that his mail had been accumulating. They explained that Charles strictly pays his rent via money order.

They further noted that Charles does not drive; he relies entirely on a bicycle for transportation and is frequently seen wearing distinctive red headphones. The manager advised she operates surveillance cameras across the street from Charles’s unit and would review them for any recent activity.

Initial attempts by deputies to make contact at the residence yielded no response, and a visual check through the windows showed no signs of anyone inside. The following day, Charles's brother met with deputies at the residence after hiring a locksmith to gain entry and officially reported Charles as a missing person.

According to the brother, he last spoke with Charles in September. His brother noted that he lives a highly isolated lifestyle devoid of drugs or alcohol and has no social circle outside of his brother.

Furthermore, Charles is missing a front tooth and utilizes a dental retainer with a prosthetic tooth attached, which deputies located left behind in the bathroom. The interior of the residence appeared partially packed with several items missing, leading the brother to suspect that Charles may have fled to camp somewhere in Santa Cruz.

On 03/22/2026, deputies conducted additional follow-up at the mobile home park and spoke with Charles’s immediate neighbor. She corroborated that Charles is a quiet, isolated individual who travels by bicycle while wearing red headphones, and she stated she had not seen him in over a month.

A subsequent check of the exterior of Charles’s secured unit revealed that his bicycle was missing, suggesting he likely used it to leave the area. Charles was immediately entered into the Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

Area checks at the Behavioral Health Unit, local hospitals, and the county jail yielded negative results, and attempts to contact him via his cellular phone go directly to voicemail. Demographics: 65 years, Male, White / Caucasian.
