Mark intended to hike to the Lodgepole area of Sequoia National Park via the Colony Mill Trail and return to his home on North Fork Drive on February 8th. On February 9, 1998, at approximately 2:00pm, Sequoia National Park Rangers were notified that Mark was overdue from his hike.
Mark was approximately 1.5 miles outside the park boundary when he was last seen. On February 10, 1998, a multi-agency search and rescue effort was undertaken including helicopters, ground search teams, and search dogs.
